about

Madhu is a self-taught artist based in UK, her works include drawing, painting and textiles works. As artist and a woman of Indian heritage, her work draws on traditions, materials and processes from her roots.  Her work mainly draws on the stories of migration and  lives of women of colour. She is also keenly aware of the colonial histories and its legacies hidden in everyday materials. Her work combines the use of various traditional methods of making, rooted in Indian textile heritage such as handloom cottons, natural dyes and Kantha stitch. Drawing on domestic and valuing the work of the hand,  she creates textile works that reflect the often overlooked lives and legacies.  Her work exposes a rich tactile surface inviting the viewer to touch, bringing them closer to experiencing the work. Her recent workexploring hidden histories of textiles  titled “Threadbare Narratives” was exhibited at British Textile Biennial -2023 (Supported by Arts Council of England).   Currently she is Artist in residence at her local refugee community .

Madhu holds MA in Creative Technology from DeMontfort University, Leicester
